Maybe you don’t want to leave Sydney quite yet, and you’re more interested in getting yourself a bank account, medicare card, tax file number, and find a JOB! Here are some tips to get you started.
Four things you must do to hit the ground running:
If you plan to work in Australia you will need an Australian bank account. It’s very easy to set one up. Just about any bank will be very happy to open an account for you. The four major banks are – Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Westpac, ANZ, National Australia Bank. To open an account simply go into any bank with your passport and they’ll be able to set you up with an account. If you need to use an address you can use ours – 509 Pitt Street, Sydney NSW 2000
Employers will not contact you by phone if you don’t have an Australian mobile phone number. Getting set up is very easy. There are three major networks in Australia, all of which have “pre-pay” options – Vodafone, Optus and Telstra. Most will offer you a free or cheap SIM card. We have free Vodafone SIM cards at reception if you need one on arrival. Please note that if your mobile phone from home is “locked” to your network, it may not work with an Australian SIM. If you need to purchase a cheap phone for your time in Australia, we have some for sale at the Travel Desk. All Australian SIM Cards must be registered before they will work – this varies by network, but it’s always very easy to do, either online or over the phone. To register an Australian SIM Card you will need your passport number, and an Australian address – again you can use the Wake Up! address if you need to – 509 Pitt Street, Sydney NSW 2000
You must have a TFN to work in Australia. It is free, and you can apply online via the Tax Office website here. You will need your passport details and an Australian address – again you can use the Wake Up! address if you need to – 509 Pitt Street, Sydney NSW 2000
Medicare cards allow nationals from some countries (on certain visas) to receive some medical treatments free of charge while in Australia. To check that you are eligible first – click here. If you are eligible, you can apply for your free Medicare card at any Medicare office. The closest one to Wake Up! is at this address, which is only a short walk away: Town Hall Arcade, Shop 30, Sydney, NSW 2000. You will need to print off an application form, which you can find online here. Make sure you bring a copy of your visa, your passport and a complete application form with you when you apply.
